Dakota X formerly (Deborah Martin) received a BFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and a BS in Art Education from Tufts University. She is a recipient of the Lillian Orlowsky and William Freed Grant, established through the legacy of American modernist painters Lillian Orlowsky and William Freed. X was a finalist in a shortlist of 70, Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer Portrait Award, National Portrait Gallery, London.

Her work has been exhibited nationally, including the Provincetown Art Association and Museum; the New Museum Los Gatos; the Biggs Museum of American Art; the Susquehanna Art Museum; and the Lancaster Museum of Art and History, the latter four through the multi-institutional exhibition The Circle of Truth.

Publications featuring her work include Juxtapoz Magazine, Palm Springs Life Magazine, ARTS+CULTURE, art ltd., Angeleno Magazine, New American Paintings, The Provincetown Independent, Provincetown Magazine, The Provincetown Banner, and Provincetown Arts, among others.
